Most universal and practical of all must have seemed the leaflet on making a garden trench shelter for six people. Derek Sprake explains:

This involved initially digging a trench 2ft deep, 4ft wide and 10ft long (which the pamphlet stated would take one man four hours to dig), which would provide protection for six people lying down. Subsequent enlargement (presumably if you had survived) involved lowering the trench to a depth of 4ft 6in. making it generally bigger, with wooden supports and a corrugated tin roof. Dug earth formed a bank on each side … A ladder at one end provided access and an entrance was protected by a gas curtain …
